Leadership Summit

I’m writing from the 2006 Leadership Summit, a “production” of Willow Creek church. No, I’m not in Chicago. I’m at a satellite location in Orlando.

Yesterdays sessions (the one’s I could attend) urged people to take the roles of leadership and management seriously – if God is calling you, serve him well, with your whole heart. It’s not a job, it’s a ministry!

The opening session today said…

the key to effective service (over the long haul) is a healthy workplace. (As the vice president for personnel, that woke me up.) When people love the organization where they work, they will serve their customers with loyalty and joy. This makes it easy to promote quality service and loyal customers.

Management must take care of the people they manage. I believe this is especially true in Christian ministries. (God, speaking to me, reminded me how I have too regularly overworked myself, and how I allow some of my staff to be overworked as well.) We often don’t think in terms of having “customers”, but we certainly do serve people. And we want that service to be effective!

I could write lots, but I won’t do that here. Leave a comment (or drop me an email) if you want to talk more about the implications of this.
